General information, not veterinary advice
The guides, answers and feeding tips on the Minnow Pet Treats website are general information about dog and cat treats. They are not veterinary advice, and they are not a diagnosis or treatment plan for any animal. Sniff & Shift LLC is a treat maker, not a veterinary practice, and nothing on this Site creates a veterinarian and client relationship.
Ask your vet about your own pet
Every animal is different. Before you feed these treats, talk with a licensed veterinarian if your pet:
- has a health condition, a sensitive stomach, or a food allergy or intolerance;
- is on a prescription or special diet;
- is a puppy, kitten, pregnant, nursing or a senior; or
- has never had a particular ingredient before.
Read the ingredients for every product
- Fish. Every product on this Site is fish: whole marble goby, whole sardines, sardine heads and anchovies. Each is a single ingredient, and the Fish Trio is a set of three of those bags. If your pet has trouble with fish, do not feed them.
- Whole fish, bones and heads. The fish are sold whole. The sardines keep their heads, tails and small bones, and the sardine heads keep their bones and eyes. Size and shape vary fish to fish. Always supervise, and break pieces down for small dogs and for cats. If you are unsure about your own pet and fish bones, ask your veterinarian.
We cannot promise that any treat is free of an ingredient that is a problem for your pet. If an ingredient is a problem for your pet, do not feed that treat.
Handling
All of our fish on this Site are raw before freeze-drying: the minnows (marble goby), sardines, sardine heads and anchovies, and so the Fish Trio too. None of them is cooked. VCA Animal Hospitals advises caution with freeze-dried or dehydrated raw treats because of the risk of bacterial contamination to the pet, other pets and people (VCA, Dog Treats; VCA, Cat Treats). Wash your hands with soap and water after handling the treats, and clean surfaces and bowls that touch them. For more on safe handling, read the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's page Get the Facts! Raw Pet Food Diets can be Dangerous to You and Your Pet.
Treats are a supplement, not a meal
These products are for treating and rewarding. They are not a complete and balanced diet. Keep treats to a small share of your pet's daily food and adjust meals if you give more treats. The package label lists the calories. Your vet can tell you what amount is right for your pet.
Feed with care
- Always supervise your pet while it eats a treat.
- Size the treat to the pet: break pieces into smaller ones for small dogs and for cats, and pick a piece size that suits your pet's size and chewing habits.
- Never leave whole fish or fish heads out for a pet to eat unwatched.
- Keep fresh water available at all times.
- Introduce a new treat gradually, starting with a small amount, so you can see how your pet does with it.
- Reseal the bag after opening and store it cool and dry.
- Stop feeding and contact your vet if you notice vomiting, diarrhea, itching, choking or any other change that worries you. In an emergency, call your vet or an emergency animal hospital right away.
Guidance from outside sources
Where this Site repeats guidance about a food or about treats in general, it names the public source it comes from, such as the AKC, ASPCA, FDA or VCA. That guidance is general, not specific to our treats, and it is not a claim that any treat will prevent, treat or cure a condition.
