Serving freeze-dried anchovies to a large dog
Updated
Anchovies for large dogs fit the listing, which names adult dogs of all sizes. What matters for a big dog is the share, and that is a weight worked out from the daily calories your veterinarian gives you, not a count of fish. The bag is one size, 2 ounces, and you stay beside the dog while it eats.
Can large dogs eat freeze-dried anchovies?
Yes. The anchovy listing names adult dogs of all sizes, and a big dog sits inside that line with no special note. Because the listing names adult dogs, ask your veterinarian before a puppy has any.
Here is what the anchovy page sells: one ingredient, anchovies, with the species named as Stolephorus chinensis. No grains, fillers or dyes go in, the listing adds. Each bag is made in Malvern, Pennsylvania from imported fish.
Two lines on the listing matter before the first handful. The anchovies are a treat or a topper, not a complete and balanced diet. And the listing's FAQ says, "If your dog has had trouble with seafood before, ask your veterinarian first." That goes for a big dog as much as a small one.
How is a large dog's anchovy share worked out?
By weight. People search for how many anchovies for a big dog and expect a count, but the listing says size, shape and color vary from fish to fish, so a count tells you very little.
For the math, use the treat calculator on the anchovy page. You type your dog's daily calories, which come from your veterinarian. It applies a default of 10 percent and uses the energy figure printed on the label. The bag says: "Metabolizable Energy: 2,930 kcal ME/kg (approximately 83.1 kcal/oz)". Out comes a figure in grams and ounces of anchovies.
That 10 percent is the calculator's default setting, and it is meant for dogs. The sardine page credits it to VCA's treat guidance, and the sardine listing's FAQ puts it this way: "Hold all treats to about 10 percent of the day's calories." It is not printed on the bag.
Read the number first, then pick up the fish, the way you would read a torque spec before reaching for the wrench. We do not print a different figure for a big dog, because the number you type is what does the work. All the day's treats come out of that one pool, the anchovies included.
Do anchovies need breaking for a big dog?
The listing does not tell anyone to hand over a whole anchovy. It describes three uses:
- A treat.
- Pieces, broken off as rewards.
- A topper over the dog's regular food.
Piece size is yours to set, because the listing prints none. Look at the dog, look at the fish, and cut the piece down to suit.
Each anchovy is a whole fish with its bones in. We make no bone claim about them. The sardine heads listing's FAQ says, "If you are unsure about your own dog and fish bones, ask your veterinarian." Size the piece to the dog, supervise, and take any bone question to your veterinarian.
Anchovies or whole sardines for a large dog?
Our Fish Trio page compares the two. It calls sardines the largest fish, and it calls anchovies smaller and drier, the easiest to pocket. Treat that as the page's observation, not a measurement, since we print no fish lengths.
If a bigger fish is what you want in a big dog's hand, we wrote a separate guide on sardines for large dogs. The sardines also come in three bag sizes, 1.5, 3 and 6 ounces, while the anchovies come in one.
Either way, the share rules are the same. Weigh it, count it against the day, and keep the dog in view. Our guides page lists the other fish questions we have written up.
Is one 2 ounce bag enough for a big dog?
Enough depends on the number you typed into the calculator. Compare its ounce result with the 2 ounces in the bag. If the day's figure is higher than 2 ounces, one bag is less than a day of treat budget. If it is lower, the bag covers more than a day. We will not guess which side your dog lands on.
The bag does not change the share. A bigger or smaller bag would only change how many days one bag covers. For storage, the listing says to close the bag again after opening, keep it cool and dry, and skip the refrigerator.
Questions
Can a large dog have anchovies over its food?
The listing names a topper as one of the uses. Crumble a measured amount over the regular meal, and count it toward the same daily share as any piece you hand out. The anchovies are not a complete and balanced diet, so they sit on top of the dog's food.
Does a giant breed need a different amount?
This page prints no amount for any breed, and the label's guaranteed analysis lists percentages and an energy figure, not servings. The calculator turns your dog's daily calories into a weight. For a giant breed, get that calorie number from your veterinarian, not from us.
Do I still watch a big dog eat anchovies?
Yes. The listing says to supervise while your pet eats, and to keep fresh water available. Stay close, take away whatever the dog leaves, and ask your veterinarian about anything specific to your own dog and fish.
Are the anchovies freeze-dried raw?
Yes, they are freeze-dried raw, so handle them as raw fish. The sardine heads listing says, "This is raw fish, so wash your hands after handling it," and we keep the same habit with the anchovies. Wash up after each handful you break or serve.
Is there a bigger bag of anchovies?
Only the one. Anchovies are sold in a single 2 ounce bag. A larger sardine bag exists, at 6 ounces, but that is a different fish with its own page. Your calculator result tells you how long a 2 ounce bag covers a given dog.
